Landscapes of Faith Map Illustrations
Project Background
In 2013 Michael Sadgrove, Dean of Durham wrote a book about the Christian heritage of the North East.
It’s a beautiful coffee table book, published by Third Millennium Publishing Group. They describe it as “…not only a tribute to the region’s heritage and beauty, but also to the indispensable contribution the Christian presence and imagination have made to the fashioning of its history.”
I was lucky enough to be asked to contribute three illustrations.
The first was to be a simple map of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. No illustrations were needed but I had a good time looking at old maps of Northumbria, as well as the Lindisfarne gospels, for inspiration.
The second was a small map illustrating St. Cuthbert’s final journey..
The last one was a map of Holy Island..
This was a huge project and it was so nice to see the finished book. It’s also a fascinating read!
